The Best Mexican Dishes for Takeout Night

    All Posts

Not every dish survives the ride home. Anything meant to be crispy usually isn't by the time it hits the table, and some sauces separate or thin out in a to-go container. So if the plan is "takeout Mexican food near me" tonight, it's worth knowing which dishes actually hold up.

    Dishes That Travel Well

Slow-braised meats are the safest bet for takeout, since they're built to sit and stay tender rather than fall apart. Carnitas de puerco, pork shoulder braised until caramelized, reheats without losing much of its texture, especially with fresh tortillas kept separate until you're ready to eat. Fajitas hold up for the same reason: the meat and peppers stay flavorful even if they lose a bit of sizzle in transit.

Enchiladas verdes are another solid choice. Because they're already sauced and baked, a few extra minutes in a to-go box doesn't change much. If anything, the sauce has more time to soak in. Pozole and menudo travel especially well since they're soups; just keep the garnishes (lime, onion, cabbage, oregano) in a separate container so they stay fresh instead of wilting in the hot broth on the drive home.

What doesn't travel as well is anything meant to be eaten crispy right out of the fryer, like fresh-fried chips or anything with a delicate crust. Those are better ordered for dine-in.

    Reheating It Right at Home

However good the dish was at pickup, reheating matters just as much for both taste and food safety. USDA guidance is to reheat leftovers to an internal temperature of 165°F, and when using a microwave, to spread food evenly and cover it for more even heating. Soups, sauces, and gravies specifically should be brought back to a boil rather than just warmed through.

That means pozole and menudo should go back on the stove and actually simmer, not just get a quick zap. For carnitas or fajitas, a covered skillet on medium-low heat does a better job than a microwave at keeping the meat from drying out. A splash of water or extra sauce in the pan helps, too.

If a to-go order doesn't get eaten right away, it's best refrigerated within two hours, and reheated leftovers should go back into the fridge again if there's still more left over.

    Ordering for a Group

For anything bigger than a solo dinner, fajitas and carnitas both scale well since they're served with tortillas and sides that let everyone build their own plate. Guacamole made fresh in-house is worth adding to any group order. It's one of the few dishes that are genuinely better made fresh right before eating than left sitting in a container.
